Reflecting on Fall

Edited by: Emily of Sugar & Spice
The cold weather seems to have well and truly graced our shores this week and as we all scramble to put together something that resembles style whilst also keeping us warm — we are all trying to remember what trends we should be rocking this season, after months in our summer wardrobes. Well, allow this week’s posts to inspire, educate and warm you.

Tasty Thursday: Earl Grey Muffins

I've been baking more, as an excuse to use the oven and be warm but also because I'm starting to really enjoy the mixing of dry goods and wet stuff and the creation of delicious foods. I'm still trying to perfect a chai latte muffin to share with you, but in the meantime, here's an easy Earl Grey Muffin! I used raspberri cupcake's recipe for Earl Grey & Poppyseed Muffins as a jumping off point and made my own alterations. I didn't have poppy seeds or a flour sifter, but I did have not one but two kinds of Earl Grey Tea: Raspberry and Double Bergamot! I hope you enjoy whipping up this small half batch as much as I did eating them.

Ingredients
  • 2 Earl Grey Tea bags
  • 1/2 cup {125ml} milk
  • 1 1/4 cups {186g} flour
  • 3/4 cup {78g} caster sugar
  • 1/2 stick plus about 1 tsp {64g} butter, melted
  • 1 egg, lightly whisked

Directions
  1. Heat milk over medium flame, remove from heat, add tea, and set aside to steep for 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F {180°C} and prepare a muffin tin with 6 paper liners. In the photos, I actually used my Breville Pie Maker as both oven and muffin tin as one, since I only had a super-mini cupcake pan and no mini cupcake liners. It's all about using what you've got!
  3. Mix flour and sugar in a medium bowl. Add tea milk, butter and egg and mix well, until smooth.
  4. Spoon into muffin pan, about 3/4 full. Bake for 20-25 minutes, maximum, and allow to cool. Spread with jam and enjoy!

Worn: Hats Off To Ya

Seriously, how do you ladies keep your hats on? Is there a secret hatpin society that no one blogs about??

I found this gorgeous vintage hat in excellent condition at Crossroads and snapped it up, but it feels so unsure on my head. I've ordered a navy wool bowler for winter as well, and I think I need to investigate hatpins and hairpins a bit more. In the meantime, I've been sewing a dress that I can't wait to wear, re-watching Control with the boy and mourning the loss of Ian Curtis, dreaming of big coats, listening to Hot Water Music and trying out new chai muffin recipe variations.

I've been stocking up on supplies for my new job, too. For those that asked about it, I am photographing crafts to update an education website. I need to make the crafts as well, so I've been burrowing into tissue paper and white glue and construction paper. It's pretty much the perfect job for me because I get to stay home and work on my own schedule, utilize my photography and craft experience, and be helpful to the next generation! I like kids and all, but I don't want to work directly with them, haha!

Worn: Oh My Stars!

I've had an especially wonderful week and week's end and am feeling super lucky and grateful for my life. I'm actually excited it's Monday morning and a new week, how crazy is that? I've recently been hired to make and photograph crafts on a freelance basis, I got to dog-sit Oreo for a few days, and my lovely mother treated me to some lovely presents. On Friday I completed my first batch of assignments, and met up with the bestie for dinner and drinks and a local punk show -  I rarely "go out" but this was definitely a night of friends and fun to remember.

Saturday, said bestie and I went to lunch at the Crepe and saw the movie Sleepwalk With Me, very funny, smart and honest, but slightly depressing. I wore my favorite new dress from the Kirna Zabete for Target line, a reversible hi-lo number in my first favorite color palette - black, greys and white. Nothing depressing about this dress, though - is that animal prints and stars? It is! After rolling up the pretty but formal bell sleeves and pairing it with my go-to grey H&M cross-body and hot pink blush, I mean vintage flats from Crossroads, I looked better than I felt, ready to pig out and veg out before changing back into pajamas and going back to bed, haha.

A Little Different

Edited by: Jess of Fresh Jess
If I had a dime for every outfit post out there, I’d be a billionaire. With so many in the mix, it makes the “different” posts stand out that much more. For this week’s Links a la Mode roundup, you’ll get a peek into IFB bloggers’ lives well beyond their closet. Many of them are tuned into Fashion Week, fall trends and Fashion’s Night Out, and have put some serious thought into how these major events affect their own personal style. Others are beating to their own drum, telling stories of how dreamy places, artistic notions and the evolution of street style are bringing their wardrobes alive. Whether you’re enjoying the first, crisp breeze of fall or savoring an Indian summer, there are some great reads from some truly unique voices here for you. Enjoy!

DIY Vinyl Phone Sleeve

Still playing around with my scrap pile of vinyl. I think a clutch is next.
What do you think I should try making?

Monterey Bay Aquarium Pt. 3

The Jellies
I absolutely love the jelly fish section, almost as much as getting to watch the penguins. The tanks are all in a darkened exhibit, lit from withing to highlight to jellies best. Didja know jelly fish are the oldest multi-organ animal on earth? They pulse and flail gently in aqua tanks that seem endless. Their translucence contrasts beautifully with the glowing accents that sometimes look like electric lights. There are even jelly fish that lie on the ocean floor and look like anemones, lifting their bellies to the sun and catching prey as it drifts by.

Sea Horses
The newest exhibit at the Aquarium is The Secret Life of Sea Horses, which I hadn't seen before. These crazy looking little creatures are so fascinating; I'm sorry I couldn't get any better photos of them, but they are more skittish than the other animals in the aquarium. The site calls tehm "shy and secretive." They always moved away before I could focus and get a good shot! There were specimens up to eight or nine inches long, and some as small as fingernails. I learned that the males carry and pop out the babies; seems like more species should try this maybe? I also learned that the tourist trade in dried starfish and seahorses, for example, is having a detrimental effect on the ocean's wildlife. Farmers harvest whole portions of live reefs, fish and all, for profit, while leaving an area denuded.

Penguin Party
I like to think penguins are my spirit animal. These are South African penguins, not the March Of The Penguins arctic kind, but they are just as funny and cute. They have their names on a little armband to tell them apart. One kept worrying the keeper's boot and pant leg with its beak, demanding treats. The swimmers looked so cheerful zipping around in the water and floating by the windows. It's almost as though they're posing nonchalantly while watching us watch them.

Check out my first two posts {here and here} from our day trip to Monterey. And if you're interested in more Monterey Bay Aquarium stuff, check out their exhibits and learn more from their site, www.montereybayaquarium.org
